Application Fields
With its characteristics of "high polymerization activity + excellent flexibility," BA is the most widely used monomer among acrylates (accounting for approximately 40% of the total), extensively used in scenarios requiring flexibility, adhesion, and film-forming properties:
Coatings and Paints:
Latex Paint: Copolymerized with MMA at a 7:3 ratio (the "soft monomer" BA provides flexibility, while the "hard monomer" MMA provides hardness) to prepare interior architectural wall paints. The film elongation is > 300% (GB/T 16777), scrub resistance reaches over 3000 cycles, and low-temperature film-forming performance is excellent (minimum film-forming temperature < 0℃).
Industrial Coatings: Copolymerized with isooctyl acrylate for use in anti-corrosion coatings for steel structures. Due to the strong weather resistance of the ester group, the coating's outdoor weathering resistance (QUV test) reaches 2000 hours without chalking, and adhesion (cross-cut method) reaches level 0.
Adhesives and Sealants:
Pressure Sensitive Adhesives (PSA): Copolymerized with vinyl acetate (VAc) to prepare tape adhesives. BA provides tack (180° peel strength > 5 N/25mm), while VAc enhances cohesion. It is suitable for express packaging tapes (holding power > 24 hours, GB/T 4851).
Water-based Adhesives: Modified polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) emulsion, where BA segments enhance the flexibility of the adhesive film. Used for paper lamination, its fold endurance (180° repeated folding 50 times without cracking) is superior to pure PVA adhesive.
Synthetic Rubber and Elastomers:
Acrylate Rubber (ACM): Copolymerized with acrylonitrile. Its oil resistance (immersed in 150℃ mineral oil for 100 hours, volume change < 10%) is superior to nitrile rubber. Used for automotive oil seals and high-temperature resistant hoses.
Thermoplastic Elastomers (TPE): Block copolymerized with styrene (SBS/BA system). Tensile strength reaches 15 MPa, elongation at break > 500%. Used for shoe sole materials (wear resistance improved by 30% compared to pure SBS).
Polymer Emulsions and Resins:
Textile Sizing: Copolymerized with acrylamide to prepare formaldehyde-free sizing agents. BA imparts film-forming properties to the sizing agent (film breaking strength > 2 MPa), and adhesion to polyester fibers (>80%) is superior to starch sizing, reducing the breakage rate during weaving.
Paper Coatings: Copolymerized with methacrylic acid for surface coatings on coated paper, improving paper gloss (>85%) and printability (ink absorption 30-50 g/m2).
Other Fields:
Oilfield Chemicals: Used as a monomer for drilling fluid viscosity reducers. Copolymerized with 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (AMPS), it can maintain drilling fluid viscosity stability at high temperatures (150℃) (apparent viscosity change < 10%).
Medical Materials: Modified polylactic acid (PLA). BA segments improve the brittleness of PLA (impact strength increased from 2.5 kJ/m2 to 8.0 kJ/m2), used for coatings on degradable sutures.
